Craigmore has been breeding Hereford cattle for over 50 years !

David’s grandfather had commercial Herefords and then his father, Bruce started Craigmore Herefords in 1970 and had both stud and commercial Herefords. Today David has all stud Herefords and no commercial cows. David, Sue and their son, Daniel  run the stud and have 450 breeding cows on the peatlands, south of Hamilton

The farm also finishes beef cattle that have been brought in  as store cattle. The farm also grows 150+ hectares of maize per year some of which is sold onto dairy farmers as a food supplement and some goes for grain.

For the past five years Craigmore has chosen to genomic test their bulls using a 100K SNP to help improve the accuracy of their EBVs. SNP genotypes, along with pedigree information and performance information, are incorporated into the calculation of BREEDPLAN EBVs. They assist in increasing the accuracy of an animal’s EBV figures by combining observed trait data, pedigree performance data and the genomic predictions.

This DNA technology has allowed us to:

1. Parent verify all our bulls
2. Manage genetic conditions such as hypotrichosis
3. Identify qualitative traits such as whether an animal is polled or horned.
4. Make genetic improvements in production traits.
